Retraction pulls filament back into the nozzle during travel moves to prevent oozing and stringing.

Key Parameters:

  • Distance: How far to retract (0.5-2mm for direct drive, 4-8mm for Bowden)
  • Speed: How fast to retract (30-60mm/s typical)
  • Z-Hop: Lift nozzle during travel to avoid collisions (optional)
  • Wipe: Move nozzle before lifting to wipe excess filament

Testing Process:

  1. Print a retraction tower test (varies distance/speed)
  2. Identify segment with least stringing
  3. Note what worked and what didn't
  4. Use this calculator to get refined recommendations
  5. Fine-tune ยฑ0.5mm distance or ยฑ5mm/s speed as needed

Common Issues:

  • Too little retraction: Stringing, oozing, blobs
  • Too much retraction: Nozzle clogs, underextrusion after travel
  • Speed too high: Grinding filament, skipped steps
  • Speed too low: More oozing during slow retraction

Pro Tip: Temperature affects stringing more than retraction. If retraction tuning doesn't solve stringing, try lowering temperature by 5-10ยฐC.
